  1. Noah and the Flood

    This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.
  2. Every living thing that moved on land perished—birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind.

  8. But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?”
  9. And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.”
  10. Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.”
  11. Hagar and Ishmael

    Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar;
  12. so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.” Abram agreed to what Sarai said.
  13. He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”
  14. “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations.
  15. No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.
  16. Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?”
  17. Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.
  18. Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’
  19. For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”
  20. Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”
  21. One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children—as is the custom all over the earth.
  22. Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.”
  23. Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelek, his wife and his female slaves so they could have children again,
  24. And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
  25. Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away

    The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast.
