  379. How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.
  380. To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”
  381. Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.”

  396. Jesus Calls the First Disciples

The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,
  397. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).
  398. and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”
  399. This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
  400. “Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?”
  401. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”
  402. He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing at first, and there he remained.
  403. His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him.
  404. First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
  405. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him.
  406. The Resurrection

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
  407. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
  408. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
  410. The Promise of the Holy Spirit

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach,
  411. God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.”
  412. But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers on their first visit.
  413. and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians.
  414. When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him.
  415. And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.
  416. Simeon has related how God first visited the Gentiles, to take from them a people for his name.
  417. Eutychus Raised from the Dead

On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight.
  418. And when they came to him, he said to them: “You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia,
  419. but declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all the region of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with their repentance.
  420. that the Christ must suffer and that, by being the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light both to our people and to the Gentiles.”
  421. But the centurion, wishing to save Paul, kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and make for the land,
  422. Longing to Go to Rome

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world.
  423. The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
  424. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek,
  425. but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek.
  426. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
  427. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
  428. But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says, “I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation; with a foolish nation I will make you angry.”
  429. If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, so is the whole lump, and if the root is holy, so are the branches.
  430. Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
  431. Greet also the church in their house. Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in Asia.
  432. For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part,
  433. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.
  434. If a revelation is made to another sitting there, let the first be silent.
  435. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,
  436. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
  437. But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.
  438. Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

  441. On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come.
  442. Now I urge you, brothers—you know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and that they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints—
  443. Because I was sure of this, I wanted to come to you first, so that you might have a second experience of grace.
  444. and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.
  445. For we are not overextending ourselves, as though we did not reach you. For we were the first to come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ.
  446. You know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first,
  447. so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.

  449. because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
  451. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
  452. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

  454. Stand Firm

But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.
  455. Pray for All People

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,
  456. For Adam was formed first, then Eve;
  457. And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless.
  458. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.

  461. At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them!
  462. And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God's angels worship him.”
  463. how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard,
  464. and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace.
  465. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.
  466. For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.
  467. In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
  468. The Earthly Holy Place

Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly place of holiness.
  469. For a tent was prepared, the first section, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence. It is called the Holy Place.
  470. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties,
  471. By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing
  472. Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.
  473. Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood.
  474. then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second.
  475. By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.
  476. and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,
  477. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

  487. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.
  488. To the Church in Smyrna

“And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life.
  489. “‘I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first.
  490. The Throne in Heaven

After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”
  491. the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight.
  492. The first angel blew his trumpet, and there followed hail and fire, mixed with blood, and these were thrown upon the earth. And a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.
  493. The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still to come.
  494. The First Beast

And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads.
  495. It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence, and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed.
  496. It is these who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins. It is these who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. These have been redeemed from mankind as firstfruits for God and the Lamb,
