  1. Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.
  2. If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. Then if he or she won’t accept the church’s decision, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector.
  3. Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.
  4. Great fear gripped the entire church and everyone else who heard what had happened.
  5. Saul was one of the witnesses, and he agreed completely with the killing of Stephen.

    Persecution Scatters the Believers

    A great wave of persecution began that day, sweeping over the church in Jerusalem; and all the believers except the apostles were scattered through the regions of Judea and Samaria.
  6. But Saul was going everywhere to destroy the church. He went from house to house, dragging out both men and women to throw them into prison.
  7. The church then had peace throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, and it became stronger as the believers lived in the fear of the Lord. And with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it also grew in numbers.
  8. The Church in Antioch of Syria

    Meanwhile, the believers who had been scattered during the persecution after Stephen’s death traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch of Syria. They preached the word of God, but only to Jews.
  9. When the church at Jerusalem heard what had happened, they sent Barnabas to Antioch.
  10. When he found him, he brought him back to Antioch. Both of them stayed there with the church for a full year, teaching large crowds of people. (It was at Antioch that the believers were first called Christians.)
  11. This they did, entrusting their gifts to Barnabas and Saul to take to the elders of the church in Jerusalem.
  12. James Is Killed and Peter Is Imprisoned

    About that time King Herod Agrippa began to persecute some believers in the church.
  13. But while Peter was in prison, the church prayed very earnestly for him.
  14. Barnabas and Saul Are Commissioned

    Among the prophets and teachers of the church at Antioch of Syria were Barnabas, Simeon (called “the black man”), Lucius (from Cyrene), Manaen (the childhood companion of King Herod Antipas), and Saul.
  15. Paul and Barnabas also appointed elders in every church. With prayer and fasting, they turned the elders over to the care of the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.
  16. Upon arriving in Antioch, they called the church together and reported everything God had done through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles, too.
  17. Paul and Barnabas disagreed with them, arguing vehemently. Finally, the church decided to send Paul and Barnabas to Jerusalem, accompanied by some local believers, to talk to the apostles and elders about this question.
  18. The church sent the delegates to Jerusalem, and they stopped along the way in Phoenicia and Samaria to visit the believers. They told them—much to everyone’s joy—that the Gentiles, too, were being converted.
  19. When they arrived in Jerusalem, Barnabas and Paul were welcomed by the whole church, including the apostles and elders. They reported everything God had done through them.
  20. The Letter for Gentile Believers

    Then the apostles and elders together with the whole church in Jerusalem chose delegates, and they sent them to Antioch of Syria with Paul and Barnabas to report on this decision. The men chosen were two of the church leaders—Judas (also called Barsabbas) and Silas.
  21. And there was great joy throughout the church that day as they read this encouraging message.
  22. They stayed for a while, and then the believers sent them back to the church in Jerusalem with a blessing of peace.
  23. Then he traveled throughout Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches there.
  24. So the churches were strengthened in their faith and grew larger every day.
  25. The next stop was at the port of Caesarea. From there he went up and visited the church at Jerusalem and then went back to Antioch.
