Elijah Ascends to Heaven

Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?” And he said, “Yes, I know; keep silent.” ...

    Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.”

  10. Elijah’s Message to Ahab

    After many days the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year of the drought, saying, “Go, present yourself to Ahab; I will send rain on the earth.”
  11. So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. The famine was severe in Samaria.
  12. As Obadiah was on the way, Elijah met him; Obadiah recognized him, fell on his face, and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”
  13. He answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord that Elijah is here.”
  14. But now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord that Elijah is here.’
  15. Yet now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord that Elijah is here’; he will surely kill me.”
  16. Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.”
  17. So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
  18. When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, you troubler of Israel?”
  19. Elijah’s Triumph over the Priests of Baal

    So Ahab sent to all the Israelites and assembled the prophets at Mount Carmel.
  20. Elijah then came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping with two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him, but if Baal, then follow him.” The people did not answer him a word.
  21. Then Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left a prophet of the Lord, but Baal’s prophets number four hundred fifty.
  22. Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many; then call on the name of your god, but put no fire to it.”
  23. At noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud! Surely he is a god; either he is meditating, or he has wandered away, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.”
  24. Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come closer to me,” and all the people came closer to him. First he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been thrown down;
  25. Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name”;
