  1. “It’s time to act because the Lord has said about David: I will rescue my people Israel from the power of the Philistines and all their enemies through my servant David.”
  2. Go to my servant David and tell him: This is what the Lord says: You are not the one to build the temple for me to live in.
  3. So then, say this to my servant David: This is what the Lord of heavenly forces says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be leader over my people Israel.
  4. Moreover, I won’t tear away the entire kingdom. I will give one tribe to your son on account of my servant David and on account of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”
  5. But I will leave him one tribe on account of my servant David and on account of Jerusalem, the city I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel.
  6. But I won’t take the whole kingdom from his hand. I will keep him as ruler throughout his lifetime on account of my servant David, who did keep my commands and my laws.
  7. I will give his son a single tribe so that my servant David will always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city that I chose for myself to place my name.
  8. If you listen to all that I command and walk in my ways, if you do what is right in my eyes, keeping my laws and my commands just as my servant David did, then I will be with you and I will build you a lasting dynasty just as I did for David. I will give you Israel.
  9. I tore the kingdom from David’s house and gave it to you. But you haven’t been like my servant David, who kept my commands and followed me with all his heart by doing only what is right in my eyes.
  10. I will defend this city and save it for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.”
  11. I will add fifteen years to your life. I will rescue you and this city from the power of the Assyian king. I will defend this city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.
  12. Go to my servant David and tell him, This is what the Lord says: You are not the one to build the temple for me to live in.
  13. So then, say this to my servant David: This is what the Lord of heavenly forces says: I myself took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be leader over my people Israel.
  14. You said, “I made a covenant with my chosen one; I promised my servant David:
  15. I discovered my servant David. I anointed him with my holy oil.
  16. I will defend this city and save it for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.
  17. only then could my covenant with my servant David and my covenant with the levitical priests who minister before me be broken; only then would David no longer have a descendant to rule on his throne.
  18. And just as the stars in the sky can’t be numbered and the sand on the shore can’t be counted, so I will increase the descendants of my servant David and the Levites who minister before me.
  19. than I would reject the descendants of Jacob and my servant David and his descendants as rulers for the children of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I will restore the captives and have compassion on them.
  20. I will appoint for them a single shepherd, and he will feed them. My servant David will feed them. He will be their shepherd.
  21. I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David will be their prince. I, the Lord, have spoken.
  22. My servant David will be king over them. There will be just one shepherd for all of them. They will follow my case laws and carefully observe my regulations.
  23. They will live on the land that I gave to my servant Jacob, where their ancestors lived. They will live on it, they and their children and their grandchildren, forever. My servant David will be their prince forever.
