  1. The First Sin and Its Punishment

    Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say, ‘You shall not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
  2. The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,
  3. But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not die,
  4. Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent tricked me, and I ate.”

  6. The Bronze Serpent

    When the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who lived in the Negeb, heard that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim, he fought against Israel and took some of them captive.
  7. Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died.
  8. The people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.
  9. And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.”
  10. So Moses made a serpent of bronze and put it upon a pole, and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live.
  11. their wine is the poison of serpents, the cruel venom of asps.
  12. He removed the high places, broke down the pillars, and cut down the sacred pole. He broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, for until those days the people of Israel had made offerings to it; it was called Nehushtan.

  18. Israel’s Redemption

    On that day the Lord with his cruel and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will kill the dragon that is in the sea.

  22. Coming Persecutions

    “I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
  23. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
  24. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents.
  25. But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by its cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
