  1. In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the Lord by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,
  2. Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the Lord.
  3. And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the Lord of hosts, their God,
  4. Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,
  5. Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the Lord; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the Lord, and work: for I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts:
  6. And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.
  7. Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the Branch.
  8. Then take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest;
  9. Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,
  10. And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.
  11. And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.
  12. But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.
  13. And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
  14. But Jesus held his peace, And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
  15. Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.
  16. How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
  17. And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
  18. And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.
  19. And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.
  20. And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
  21. But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
  22. Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?
  23. And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:
  24. Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
  25. And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
