  1. I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.
  2. But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.
  3. In the Law it is written: “With other tongues and through the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.”
  4. Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers but for believers.

  6. Good Order in Worship

    What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.
  7. If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret.
  8. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.
  9. and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
  10. Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.
  11. Taming the Tongue

    Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
  12. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
  13. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
  14. but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
  15. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.
  16. For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.
