  1. The Lord Raises Up Judges

    Then the Lord raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those who plundered them.
  2. Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they whored after other gods and bowed down to them. They soon turned aside from the way in which their fathers had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the Lord, and they did not do so.
  3. Whenever the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge, and he saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge. For the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who afflicted and oppressed them.
  4. But whenever the judge died, they turned back and were more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods, serving them and bowing down to them. They did not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways.
  5. The Spirit of the Lord was upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. And his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim.
  6. Shamgar

    After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed 600 of the Philistines with an oxgoad, and he also saved Israel.
  7. Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained.
  8. And he judged Israel twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried at Shamir.
  9. After him arose Jair the Gileadite, who judged Israel twenty-two years.
  10. I therefore have not sinned against you, and you do me wrong by making war on me. The Lord, the Judge, decide this day between the people of Israel and the people of Ammon.”
  11. Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in his city in Gilead.
  12. Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon

    After him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.
  13. He had thirty sons, and thirty daughters he gave in marriage outside his clan, and thirty daughters he brought in from outside for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.
  14. After him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel, and he judged Israel ten years.
  15. After him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel.
  16. He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys, and he judged Israel eight years.
  17. And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.
  18. Then his brothers and all his family came down and took him and brought him up and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father. He had judged Israel twenty years.
  19. So 600 men of the tribe of Dan, armed with weapons of war, set out from Zorah and Eshtaol,
  20. Now the 600 men of the Danites, armed with their weapons of war, stood by the entrance of the gate.
  21. And the five men who had gone to scout out the land went up and entered and took the carved image, the ephod, the household gods, and the metal image, while the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the 600 men armed with weapons of war.
  22. The people of Benjamin came out of Gibeah and destroyed on that day 22,000 men of the Israelites.
  23. But 600 men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon and remained at the rock of Rimmon four months.
