  12. Melchizedek the Priest

  15. Jesus Like Melchizedek

    If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood—and indeed the law given to the people established that priesthood—why was there still need for another priest to come, one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron?
  16. And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears,
  17. For it is declared: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”
  18. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
  19. Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.
  20. For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.
  21. and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.
  22. But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.
  23. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.
  24. He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.
  25. For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.
