  17. When Moses had proclaimed every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people.
  18. In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies.
  19. In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
  20. Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own.
  21. Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
  22. Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,
  23. because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”
  24. If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.
  25. They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.
