  9. The Fall of Jericho

    Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”
  10. Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.
  11. On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times.
  12. At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath: “Cursed before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho: “At the cost of his firstborn son he will lay its foundations; at the cost of his youngest he will set up its gates.”
  13. Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions.
  14. “‘In the morning, present yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe the Lord chooses shall come forward clan by clan; the clan the Lord chooses shall come forward family by family; and the family the Lord chooses shall come forward man by man.
  15. Joshua had his family come forward man by man, and Achan son of Karmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was chosen.
  16. Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I have done:
  17. Not a man remained in Ai or Bethel who did not go after Israel. They left the city open and went in pursuit of Israel.
  18. When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai in the fields and in the wilderness where they had chased them, and when every one of them had been put to the sword, all the Israelites returned to Ai and killed those who were in it.
  19. He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters.
  20. The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you.”
  21. So Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely, but a few survivors managed to reach their fortified cities.
  22. The whole army then returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one uttered a word against the Israelites.
  23. All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.
  24. Except for the Hivites living in Gibeon, not one city made a treaty of peace with the Israelites, who took them all in battle.
  25. And the territory of Og king of Bashan, one of the last of the Rephaites, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei.
