  1. in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God’s will the way may be opened for me to come to you.
  2. God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness,
  3. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
  4. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
  5. God’s Righteous Judgment

You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.
  6. Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.
  7. So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?
  8. Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?
  9. But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.
  10. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.
  11. As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”
  12. God’s Faithfulness

What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision?
  13. What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness?
  14. But if our unrighteousness brings out God’s righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.)
  15. Someone might argue, “If my falsehood enhances God’s truthfulness and so increases his glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?”
  16. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.
  17. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
  18. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!
  19. For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
  20. But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!
  21. For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!
  22. We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
  23. But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
  24. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law;
  25. Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.
