  17. Paul Returns to Antioch

    After this, Paul stayed many days longer and then took leave of the brothers and set sail for Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila. At Cenchreae he had cut his hair, for he was under a vow.
  18. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.
  19. But when some became stubborn and continued in unbelief, speaking evil of the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them and took the disciples with him, reasoning daily in the hall of Tyrannus.
  20. And they took the youth away alive, and were not a little comforted.
  21. And when he met us at Assos, we took him on board and went to Mitylene.
  22. And coming to us, he took Paul's belt and bound his own feet and hands and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘This is how the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’”
  23. Then Paul took the men, and the next day he purified himself along with them and went into the temple, giving notice when the days of purification would be fulfilled and the offering presented for each one of them.
  24. He at once took soldiers and centurions and ran down to them. And when they saw the tribune and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.
  25. So he took him and brought him to the tribune and said, “Paul the prisoner called me and asked me to bring this young man to you, as he has something to say to you.”
  26. The tribune took him by the hand, and going aside asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?”
  27. So the soldiers, according to their instructions, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.
  28. After he stayed among them not more than eight or ten days, he went down to Caesarea. And the next day he took his seat on the tribunal and ordered Paul to be brought.
  29. So when they came together here, I made no delay, but on the next day took my seat on the tribunal and ordered the man to be brought.
  30. So they took a sounding and found twenty fathoms. A little farther on they took a sounding again and found fifteen fathoms.
  31. And when he had said these things, he took bread, and giving thanks to God in the presence of all he broke it and began to eat.
  32. And the brothers there, when they heard about us, came as far as the Forum of Appius and Three Taverns to meet us. On seeing them, Paul thanked God and took courage.
