  1. Choosing of the Seven

    Now about this time, when the number of disciples was increasing, a complaint was made by the Hellenists (Greek-speaking Jews) against the [native] Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food.
  2. Therefore, brothers, choose from among you seven men with good reputations [men of godly character and moral integrity], full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.
  3. Then Joseph sent and invited Jacob his father and all his relatives to come to him, seventy-five persons in all.
  4. When He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He gave their land [to our ancestors] as an inheritance—this took about four hundred and fifty years.
  5. Seven sons of one [named] Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.

    Then summoning two of the centurions, he said, “Have two hundred soldiers ready by the third hour of the night (9:00 p.m.) to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen;
  11. All told there were two hundred and seventy-six of us aboard the ship.
  12. There we found some believers and were invited to stay with them for seven days. And so we came to Rome.
