  1. How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

  18. “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”
  19. But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.”
  20. Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
  21. To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.
  22. The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”
  23. When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
  24. Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”
  25. So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”
