  1. so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life [after physical death, and will actually live forever].

  7. The Death and Resurrection of Lazarus

    Now a certain man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived.
  8. When Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness will not end in death; but [on the contrary it is] for the glory and honor of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.”
  9. However, Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was referring to natural sleep.
  10. When Jesus saw her sobbing, and the Jews who had come with her also sobbing, He was deeply moved in spirit [to the point of anger at the sorrow caused by death] and was troubled,
  11. The one who loves his life [eventually] loses it [through death], but the one who hates his life in this world [and is concerned with pleasing God] will keep it for life eternal.
  12. Jesus Foretells His Death

    “Now My soul is troubled and deeply distressed; what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour [of trial and agony]’? But it is for this [very] purpose that I have come to this hour [this time and place].
  13. He said this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die.
  14. Jesus’ Death and Resurrection Foretold

    “A little while, and you will no longer see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me.”
  15. Then Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and judge Him according to your own law.” The Jews said, “We are not permitted to put anyone to death.”
  16. This was to fulfill the word which Jesus had spoken to indicate by what manner of death He was going to die.
  17. Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own people and their chief priests have handed You over to me. What have You done [that is worthy of death]?”
  18. Care of the Body of Jesus

    Since it was the day of Preparation [for the Sabbath], in order to prevent the bodies from hanging on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high holy day) the Jews asked Pilate to have their legs broken [to hasten death] and the bodies taken away.
  19. Now He said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. And after saying this, He said to him, “Follow Me [walk the same path of life that I have walked]!”
