  8. and after they have been destroyed before you, be careful not to be ensnared by inquiring about their gods, saying, “How do these nations serve their gods? We will do the same.”
  9. However, of those that chew the cud or that have a divided hoof you may not eat the camel, the rabbit or the hyrax. Although they chew the cud, they do not have a divided hoof; they are ceremonially unclean for you.
  10. This is how it is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel any loan they have made to a fellow Israelite. They shall not require payment from anyone among their own people, because the Lord’s time for canceling debts has been proclaimed.
  11. However, there need be no poor people among you, for in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you,
  12. You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?”
  13. This is how you are to treat all the cities that are at a distance from you and do not belong to the nations nearby.
  14. However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes.
  15. However, you may cut down trees that you know are not fruit trees and use them to build siege works until the city at war with you falls.
  16. If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found,
  17. However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you.
  18. However, if a man does not want to marry his brother’s wife, she shall go to the elders at the town gate and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to carry on his brother’s name in Israel. He will not fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to me.”
  19. Curses for Disobedience

    However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you:
  20. You yourselves know how we lived in Egypt and how we passed through the countries on the way here.
  21. For I know how rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you have been rebellious against the Lord while I am still alive and with you, how much more will you rebel after I die!
  22. In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye,
  23. How could one man chase a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the Lord had given them up?
