  1. “The Lord our God said to us in Horeb, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain.

    “Then we set out from Horeb and went through all that great and terrifying wilderness that you saw, on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us. And we came to Kadesh-barnea.

  7. And the Lord our God gave him over to us, and we defeated him and his sons and all his people.
  8. From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. The Lord our God gave all into our hands.
  9. Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near, that is, to all the banks of the river Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, whatever the Lord our God had forbidden us.

  11. For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him?
  12. The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
  13. And you said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man still live.
  14. Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, we shall die.
  15. Go near and hear all that the Lord our God will say, and speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’
  16. “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
  17. “When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you?’
  18. And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are this day.
  19. And it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us.’
  20. but with whoever is standing here with us today before the Lord our God, and with whoever is not here with us today.
  21. Beware lest there be among you a man or woman or clan or tribe whose heart is turning away today from the Lord our God to go and serve the gods of those nations. Beware lest there be among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit,
  22. “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
  23. Then my anger will be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them and hide my face from them, and they will be devoured. And many evils and troubles will come upon them, so that they will say in that day, ‘Have not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us?’
  24. For I will proclaim the name of the Lord; ascribe greatness to our God!
