  1. Jesus Presented in the Temple

    When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord
  2. (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”),
  3. and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”
  4. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,
  5. When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.

    One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.
  8. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
  9. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
  10. He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”
  11. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.
  12. Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”
  13. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.
  14. But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)
  15. And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”
  16. The Parable of the Good Samaritan

    On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
  17. “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”
  18. The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
  19. Woes on the Pharisees and the Experts in the Law

    When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table.
  20. One of the experts in the law answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.”
  21. Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.
  22. “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”
  23. When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions,
  24. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
  25. Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”
