  1. Jesus Questioned About Fasting

    Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”
  2. Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them.
  3. Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.
  4. So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan?
  5. Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable?
  6. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.
  7. Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
  8. So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
  9. How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”
  10. How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied.
  11. When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” “Twelve,” they replied.
  12. “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” They answered, “Seven.”
  13. “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”
  14. Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” “From childhood,” he answered.
  15. “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other.”
  16. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”
  17. The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!
  18. Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?
  19. David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?” The large crowd listened to him with delight.
  20. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!
  21. So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”
  22. And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”
