  1. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
  2. The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.”
  3. That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.

  7. The Parable of the Sower

    Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge.
  8. All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head.
  9. It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth.
  10. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”
  11. The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.”
  12. So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
  13. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
  14. He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”
  15. But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.
  16. Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

    The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.
  17. But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.
  18. Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.
  19. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.
  20. They all ate and were satisfied,
  21. because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
  22. And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
  23. (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.
  24. For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.)
  25. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”
