  9. Jesus Questioned About Fasting

    Then John’s disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”
  10. Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.
  11. But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say,
  12. It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!
  13. How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”
  14. But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.
  15. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand?
  16. “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.
  17. You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
  18. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”
  19. This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous
  20. How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”
  21. and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
  22. Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
  23. Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
  24. How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
  25. “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.”
