And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’

that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of innocent Abel to the blood of Zechari′ah the son of Barachi′ah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.

for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

saying, “I have sinned in betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.”

But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since they are blood money.”

Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.

Pilate Hands Jesus over to Be Crucified
So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this righteous man’s blood; see to it yourselves.”

And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”

And there was a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years,

And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.

And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by any one,

came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased.

from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechari′ah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it shall be required of this generation.

Repent or Perish
There were some present at that very time who told him of the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.

And likewise the cup after supper, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.

And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down upon the ground.

But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.

And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their language Akel′dama, that is, Field of Blood.)
