  8. When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
  9. After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child.
  10. All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished,
  11. The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.
  12. The Good Shepherd and His Sheep

    “I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber!
  13. But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.
  14. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.
  15. A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock.
  16. “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me,
  17. I have other sheep, too, that are not in this sheepfold. I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock with one shepherd.
  18. “So guard yourselves and God’s people. Feed and shepherd God’s flock—his church, purchased with his own blood—over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as leaders.
  19. What soldier has to pay his own expenses? What farmer plants a vineyard and doesn’t have the right to eat some of its fruit? What shepherd cares for a flock of sheep and isn’t allowed to drink some of the milk?
  20. Now may the God of peace— who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, and ratified an eternal covenant with his blood—
  21. Once you were like sheep who wandered away. But now you have turned to your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls.
  22. And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor.
  23. When these people eat with you in your fellowship meals commemorating the Lord’s love, they are like dangerous reefs that can shipwreck you. They are like shameless shepherds who care only for themselves. They are like clouds blowing over the land without giving any rain. They are like trees in autumn that are doubly dead, for they bear no fruit and have been pulled up by the roots.
  24. For the Lamb on the throne will be their Shepherd. He will lead them to springs of life-giving water. And God will wipe every tear from their eyes.”
