  1. Jesus Teaches about Humility

    When Jesus noticed that all who had come to the dinner were trying to sit in the seats of honor near the head of the table, he gave them this advice:
  2. “When you are invited to a wedding feast, don’t sit in the seat of honor. What if someone who is more distinguished than you has also been invited?
  3. “Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table. Then when your host sees you, he will come and say, ‘Friend, we have a better place for you!’ Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests.
  4. Then he said to them, “You like to appear righteous in public, but God knows your hearts. What this world honors is detestable in the sight of God.
  5. But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother.’”
  6. For David himself wrote in the book of Psalms: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit in the place of honor at my right hand
  7. “Beware of these teachers of religious law! For they like to parade around in flowing robes and love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces. And how they love the seats of honor in the synagogues and the head table at banquets.
  8. He himself had said that a prophet is not honored in his own hometown.
  9. so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son is certainly not honoring the Father who sent him.
  10. No wonder you can’t believe! For you gladly honor each other, but you don’t care about the honor that comes from the one who alone is God.
  11. Those who speak for themselves want glory only for themselves, but a person who seeks to honor the one who sent him speaks truth, not lies.
  12. “No,” Jesus said, “I have no demon in me. For I honor my Father—and you dishonor me.
  13. A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate with him.
  14. Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.
  15. Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today.

  17. Then God put him in the place of honor at his right hand as Prince and Savior. He did this so the people of Israel would repent of their sins and be forgiven.
  18. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand.
  19. And he told them, “Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand!”
  20. The story of what happened spread quickly all through Ephesus, to Jews and Greeks alike. A solemn fear descended on the city, and the name of the Lord Jesus was greatly honored.
  21. Then Paul said, “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, and I was brought up and educated here in Jerusalem under Gamaliel. As his student, I was carefully trained in our Jewish laws and customs. I became very zealous to honor God in everything I did, just like all of you today.
  22. As a result we were showered with honors, and when the time came to sail, people supplied us with everything we would need for the trip.
  23. He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers.
  24. But there will be glory and honor and peace from God for all who do good—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile.
  25. Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
