  17. The Burial of Jesus

    Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus’ body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away.
  18. Great fear gripped the entire church and everyone else who heard what had happened.
  19. The church then had peace throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, and it became stronger as the believers lived in the fear of the Lord. And with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it also grew in numbers.
  20. He was a devout, God-fearing man, as was everyone in his household. He gave generously to the poor and prayed regularly to God.
  21. They said, “We were sent by Cornelius, a Roman officer. He is a devout and God-fearing man, well respected by all the Jews. A holy angel instructed him to summon you to his house so that he can hear your message.”
  22. In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right.
  23. So Paul stood, lifted his hand to quiet them, and started speaking. “Men of Israel,” he said, “and you God-fearing Gentiles, listen to me.
  24. “Brothers—you sons of Abraham, and also you God-fearing Gentiles—this message of salvation has been sent to us!
  25. Some of the Jews who listened were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with many God-fearing Greek men and quite a few prominent women.
