  11. Others said, “He’s the prophet Elijah.” Still others said, “He’s a prophet like the other great prophets of the past.”
  12. “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other prophets.”
  13. Then Elijah and Moses appeared and began talking with Jesus.
  14. Peter exclaimed, “Rabbi, it’s wonderful for us to be here! Let’s make three shelters as memorials—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
  15. Suddenly, when they looked around, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw only Jesus with them.
  16. Then they asked him, “Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes?”
  17. Jesus responded, “Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready. Yet why do the Scriptures say that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be treated with utter contempt?
  18. But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they chose to abuse him, just as the Scriptures predicted.”
  19. Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah.
  20. One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink. “Wait!” he said. “Let’s see whether Elijah comes to take him down!”
  21. He will be a man with the spirit and power of Elijah. He will prepare the people for the coming of the Lord. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and he will cause those who are rebellious to accept the wisdom of the godly.”
  22. “Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land.
  23. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner—a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
  24. Others thought Jesus was Elijah or one of the other prophets risen from the dead.
  25. “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other ancient prophets risen from the dead.”
