Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”

Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?

“Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”

But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.”

Then His disciples said to Him, “Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to fill such a great multitude?”

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees
Now when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have taken no bread.”

But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “O you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread?
-
How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread?—but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Jesus Celebrates Passover with His Disciples
Now on the first day of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”

Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”

A House Divided Cannot Stand
Then the multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.

He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bag, no bread, no copper in their money belts—

Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.”

But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to Him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”

Now when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault.

Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”

But Jesus said to her, “Let the children be filled first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.”

Then His disciples answered Him, “How can one satisfy these people with bread here in the wilderness?”

Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and they did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat.

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have no bread.”

But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened?
