  8. Jesus Curses a Fig Tree

    Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry.
  9. Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered.
  10. When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked.
  11. Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done.
  12. “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.
  13. He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”
  14. Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears the Temple Courts

    The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry.
  15. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.
  16. Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
  17. In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots.
  18. Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”
  19. “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.

  21. A Tree and Its Fruit

    “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
  22. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers.
  23. Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any.
  24. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’
  25. It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.”
  26. He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.
  27. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.
  28. He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees.
  29. For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”
  30. “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
  31. Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”
  32. After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!
  33. My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
  34. These people are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted—twice dead.
  35. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

    After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree.
  38. “Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.”
  39. The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.
