And concerning them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: ‘You will listen carefully yet will never understand, you will look closely yet will never comprehend.

Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said,

As it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, “The voice of one shouting in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make his paths straight.

and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

John said, “I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

so that the word of the prophet Isaiah would be fulfilled. He said, “Lord, who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

For this reason they could not believe, because again Isaiah said,

Isaiah said these things because he saw Christ’s glory, and spoke about him.

and was returning home, sitting in his chariot, reading the prophet Isaiah.

So Philip ran up to it and heard the man reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked him, “Do you understand what you’re reading?”

And again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse will come, and the one who rises to rule over the Gentiles, in him will the Gentiles hope.”
