Chapter 16
The Demand for a Sign. The Pharisees and Sadducees came and, to test him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven.

If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.’

Some Pharisees approached him, and tested him, saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever?”

Knowing their malice, Jesus said, “Why are you testing me, you hypocrites?

and one of them [a scholar of the law] tested him by asking,

Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death,

The high priest rose and addressed him, “Have you no answer? What are these men testifying against you?”

Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they are testifying against you?”

Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them.”

Jesus said to him in reply, “It also says, ‘You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.’”

Jesus’ Testimony to John. When the messengers of John had left, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John. “What did you go out to the desert to see—a reed swayed by the wind?

And as for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.”
