  437. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
  438. And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
  439. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’
  440. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them.
  441. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living.
  442. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.
  443. And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.
  444. But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet.
  445. “Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing.
  446. But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him,
  447. but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends.
  448. The Parable of the Dishonest Manager

He also said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions.
  449. So, summoning his master's debtors one by one, he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’
  450. The master commended the dishonest manager for his shrewdness. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light.
  451. “The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone forces his way into it.
  452. Divorce and Remarriage

“Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.
  453. And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,
  454. who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores.
  455. and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side.
  456. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’
  457. Temptations to Sin

And he said to his disciples, “Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come!
  458. It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.
  459. and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.
  460. For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day.
  461. On that day, let the one who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back.
  462. Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it.
  463. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them?
  464. But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’
  465. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
  466. Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

And taking the twelve, he said to them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished.
  467. And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.
  468. Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’
  469. But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’
  470. As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen,
  471. but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.
  472. And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent.
  473. and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.
  474. David thus calls him Lord, so how is he his son?”
  475. Beware of the Scribes

And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples,
  476. He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one.
  477. Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him.
  478. And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
  479. And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
  480. But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him.
  481. Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”
  482. And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate.
  483. And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.
  484. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.
  485. And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!”
  486. Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.
  487. And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.
  488. The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid.
  489. And they remembered his words,
  490. and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.
  491. Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”
  492. Jesus Appears to His Disciples

As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!”
  493. And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
  494. and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
  495. The Ascension

And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them.
  496. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
  497. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
  498. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
  499. For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.
