  1. Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman

    While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live.”
  2. When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,
  3. Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.

  5. When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.

  7. While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”
  8. Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, “There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”
  9. Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.
  10. John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah

    Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.

  17. Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

    Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”
  18. His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.
  19. Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;
  20. Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.
  21. Jesus Before Pilate

    Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
  22. Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
  23. The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”
  24. From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”
  25. Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.
