    Then another message came to me from the Lord:
  9. “Suppose a certain man is righteous and does what is just and right.
  10. The person who sins is the one who will die. The child will not be punished for the parent’s sins, and the parent will not be punished for the child’s sins. Righteous people will be rewarded for their own righteous behavior, and wicked people will be punished for their own wickedness.
  11. All their past sins will be forgotten, and they will live because of the righteous things they have done.
  12. However, if righteous people turn from their righteous behavior and start doing sinful things and act like other sinners, should they be allowed to live? No, of course not! All their righteous acts will be forgotten, and they will die for their sins.
  13. When righteous people turn from their righteous behavior and start doing sinful things, they will die for it. Yes, they will die because of their sinful deeds.
  14. Tell her, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am your enemy, O Israel, and I am about to unsheath my sword to destroy your people—the righteous and the wicked alike.
  15. Yes, I will cut off both the righteous and the wicked! I will draw my sword against everyone in the land from south to north.
  16. “I looked for someone who might rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land. I searched for someone to stand in the gap in the wall so I wouldn’t have to destroy the land, but I found no one.
  17. But righteous people will judge these sister cities for what they really are—adulterers and murderers.
  18. “Son of man, give your people this message: The righteous behavior of righteous people will not save them if they turn to sin, nor will the wicked behavior of wicked people destroy them if they repent and turn from their sins.
  19. When I tell righteous people that they will live, but then they sin, expecting their past righteousness to save them, then none of their righteous acts will be remembered. I will destroy them for their sins.
  20. For again I say, when righteous people turn away from their righteous behavior and turn to evil, they will die.
