And the daughter of Zion is left like a booth in a vineyard, like a lodge in a cucumber field, like a besieged city.

The Lord enters into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: “It is you who have devoured the vineyard, the spoil of the poor is in your houses.

The Song of the Unfruitful Vineyard

Let me sing for my beloved a love song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill.

He digged it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; and he looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes.

And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, between me and my vineyard.

What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it? When I looked for it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes?

And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down.

For the fields of Heshbon languish, and the vine of Sibmah; the lords of the nations have struck down its branches, which reached to Jazer and strayed to the desert; its shoots spread abroad and passed over the sea.

Therefore I weep with the weeping of Jazer for the vine of Sibmah; I drench you with my tears, O Heshbon and Elea′leh; for upon your fruit and your harvest the battle shout has fallen.

And joy and gladness are taken away from the fruitful field; and in the vineyards no songs are sung, no shouts are raised; no treader treads out wine in the presses; the vintage shout is hushed.

The wine mourns, the vine languishes, all the merry-hearted sigh.

In that day: “A pleasant vineyard, sing of it!

Beat upon your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine,

All the host of heaven shall rot away, and the skies roll up like a scroll. All their host shall fall, as leaves fall from the vine, like leaves falling from the fig tree.

Do not listen to Hezeki′ah; for thus says the king of Assyria: Make your peace with me and come out to me; then every one of you will eat of his own vine, and every one of his own fig tree, and every one of you will drink the water of his own cistern;

until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

“And this shall be the sign for you: this year eat what grows of itself, and in the second year what springs of the same; then in the third year sow and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit.

Aliens shall stand and feed your flocks, foreigners shall be your plowmen and vinedressers;

They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
