New English Translation
The Lord Will Judge Babylon
This is an oracle about the wilderness by the Sea: Like strong winds blowing in the south, one invades from the wilderness, from a land that is feared.
New English Translation
My heart palpitates, I shake in fear; the twilight I desired has brought me terror.
The Voice
This is why nations strong and mighty will glorify You; the cities of ruthless people will fear and respect You.
New English Translation
So a strong nation will extol you; the towns of powerful nations will fear you.
New Living Translation
Therefore, strong nations will declare your glory; ruthless nations will fear you.
The Voice
Then your pact with death and the grave will be annulled. When the scourge that you fear comes along, It will find you and pummel you down.
New Living Translation
That is why the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, says to the people of Israel, “My people will no longer be ashamed or turn pale with fear.
The Voice
Eternal One: And then, the one you fear, Assyria, will fall and be defeated, not by the sword of man but by the sword of God. It will try to escape the edge of the blade, but its young men will be captured and put to forced labor.
The Voice
The very thing the Assyrians thought was permanent will disappear into thin air, fleeing in fear; And the discipline of their military will come to nothing. They’ll panic and run. This is what the Eternal, whose fire burns in Zion, whose furnace blazes in Jerusalem, has said.
New English Translation
They will surrender their stronghold because of fear; their officers will be afraid of the Lord’s battle flag.” This is what the Lord says— the one whose fire is in Zion, whose firepot is in Jerusalem.
New English Translation
In a year’s time you carefree ones will shake with fear, for the grape harvest will fail, and the fruit harvest will not arrive.
New English Translation
Tremble, you complacent ones! Shake with fear, you carefree ones! Strip off your clothes and expose yourselves— put sackcloth around your waists.
The Message
God is supremely esteemed. His center holds. Zion brims over with all that is just and right. God keeps your days stable and secure— salvation, wisdom, and knowledge in surplus, and best of all, Zion’s treasure, Fear-of-God.
New Living Translation
The sinners in Jerusalem shake with fear. Terror seizes the godless. “Who can live with this devouring fire?” they cry. “Who can survive this all-consuming fire?”
The Voice
Edom’s waters will be made thick and black as oily pitch. Its dust will turn to brimstone, and the land will ignite with burning pitch.
The Message
Energize the limp hands, strengthen the rubbery knees. Tell fearful souls, “Courage! Take heart! God is here, right here, on his way to put things right And redress all wrongs. He’s on his way! He’ll save you!”
The Message
“Far-flung ocean islands see it and panic. The ends of the earth are shaken. Fearfully they huddle together. They try to help each other out, making up stories in the dark. The godmakers in the workshops go into overtime production, crafting new models of no-gods, Urging one another on—‘Good job!’ ‘Great design!’— pounding in nails at the base so that the things won’t tip over.
New Living Translation
The lands beyond the sea watch in fear. Remote lands tremble and mobilize for war.
The Voice
Eternal One: But you, My servant, Israel, Jacob whom I have chosen and descendant of My friend, Abraham,
The Message
“But you, Israel, are my servant. You’re Jacob, my first choice, descendants of my good friend Abraham. I pulled you in from all over the world, called you in from every dark corner of the earth, Telling you, ‘You’re my servant, serving on my side. I’ve picked you. I haven’t dropped you.’ Don’t panic. I’m with you. There’s no need to fear for I’m your God. I’ll give you strength. I’ll help you. I’ll hold you steady, keep a firm grip on you.
