  1. And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a striving after wind.

    I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But behold, this also was vanity.

  8. because sometimes a person who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave everything to be enjoyed by someone who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil.
  9. For all his days are full of sorrow, and his work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does not rest. This also is vanity.
  10. There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God,
  11. For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
  12. He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.
  13. also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God's gift to man.
  14. Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man's envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

  19. Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil—this is the gift of God.
  20. If a man fathers a hundred children and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not satisfied with life's good things, and he also has no burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he.
  21. Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the appetite: this also is vanity and a striving after wind.
  22. For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fools; this also is vanity.
  23. Those Who Fear God Will Do Well

    Then I saw the wicked buried. They used to go in and out of the holy place and were praised in the city where they had done such things. This also is vanity.
  24. Man Cannot Know God's Ways

    There is a vanity that takes place on earth, that there are righteous people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.
  25. This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that the same event happens to all. Also, the hearts of the children of man are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
  26. I have also seen this example of wisdom under the sun, and it seemed great to me.
  27. Remember Your Creator in Your Youth

    Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, “I have no pleasure in them”;
  28. they are afraid also of what is high, and terrors are in the way; the almond tree blossoms, the grasshopper drags itself along, and desire fails, because man is going to his eternal home, and the mourners go about the streets—
  29. Fear God and Keep His Commandments

    Besides being wise, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge, weighing and studying and arranging many proverbs with great care.
