  1. Moses and the Burning Bush

    Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.
  2. Moses Returns to Egypt

    Then Moses went back to Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, “Let me return to my own people in Egypt to see if any of them are still alive.” Jethro said, “Go, and I wish you well.”
  3. The same law applies both to the native-born and to the foreigner residing among you.”
  4. This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips. For the Lord brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand.

  6. Jethro Visits Moses

    Now Jethro, the priest of Midian and father-in-law of Moses, heard of everything God had done for Moses and for his people Israel, and how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.
  7. After Moses had sent away his wife Zipporah, his father-in-law Jethro received her
  8. Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, together with Moses’ sons and wife, came to him in the wilderness, where he was camped near the mountain of God.
  9. Jethro had sent word to him, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons.”
  10. So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. They greeted each other and then went into the tent.
  11. Moses told his father-in-law about everything the Lord had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel’s sake and about all the hardships they had met along the way and how the Lord had saved them.
  12. Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal with Moses’ father-in-law in the presence of God.
  13. When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, “What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?”
  14. Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good.
  15. Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said.
  16. Then Moses sent his father-in-law on his way, and Jethro returned to his own country.
  17. “These are the laws you are to set before them:
  18. This law also applies if the bull gores a son or daughter.
  19. Laws of Justice and Mercy

    “Do not spread false reports. Do not help a guilty person by being a malicious witness.
  20. “Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd,
  21. and do not show favoritism to a poor person in a lawsuit.
  22. “Do not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits.
  23. Sabbath Laws

    “For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops,
  24. When Moses went and told the people all the Lord’s words and laws, they responded with one voice, “Everything the Lord has said we will do.”
  25. The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction.”
