  1. Fear the Lord

    The spirit of those who fear the Lord will live, for their hope is in him who saves them.
  2. He who fears the Lord will not be timid, nor play the coward, for he is his hope.
  3. May the bones of the twelve prophets revive from where they lie, for they comforted the people of Jacob and delivered them with confident hope.
  4. For I have put my hope in the Everlasting to save you, and joy has come to me from the Holy One, because of the mercy which soon will come to you from your everlasting Savior.
  5. Then all the assembly shouted loudly and blessed God, who saves those who hope in him.
  6. as he promised through the law. For we have hope in God that he will soon have mercy upon us and will gather us from everywhere under heaven into his holy place, for he has rescued us from great evils and has purified the place.
  7. While he lay prostrate, speechless because of the divine intervention and deprived of any hope of recovery,

  10. And when he was near death, he said, “One cannot but choose to die at the hands of men and to cherish the hope that God gives of being raised again by him. But for you there will be no resurrection to life!”
  11. The mother was especially admirable and worthy of honorable memory. Though she saw her seven sons perish within a single day, she bore it with good courage because of her hope in the Lord.
  12. But you, unholy wretch, you most defiled of all men, do not be elated in vain and puffed up by uncertain hopes, when you raise your hand against the children of heaven.
  13. But when his sufferings did not in any way abate, for the judgment of God had justly come upon him, he gave up all hope for himself and wrote to the Jews the following letter, in the form of a supplication. This was its content:
  14. If you and your children are well and your affairs are as you wish, I am glad. As my hope is in heaven,
  15. I do not despair of my condition, for I have good hope of recovering from my illness,
  16. Then Shecani′ah the son of Jehi′el, one of the men of Israel, called out, and said to Ezra, “We have sinned against the Lord, and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land; but even now there is hope for Israel.
  17. They remained resolutely hopeful of obtaining help, and they abhorred those who separated themselves from them, considering them to be enemies of the Jewish nation, and depriving them of common fellowship and mutual help.
  18. And at that time men shall hope but not obtain; they shall labor but their ways shall not prosper.
  19. And what good is it that an everlasting hope has been promised us, but we have miserably failed?
  20. so that the whole earth, freed from your violence, may be refreshed and relieved, and may hope for the judgment and mercy of him who made it.’”
  21. Take courage, therefore, O holy-minded mother, maintaining firm an enduring hope in God.
