  1. God answered Solomon, “Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked for possessions, wealth, honor, or the life of those who hate you, and have not even asked for long life, but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself that you may govern my people over whom I have made you king,
  2. Now it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of the Lord, the God of Israel.
  3. But the Lord said to David my father, ‘Whereas it was in your heart to build a house for my name, you did well that it was in your heart.

  6. yet if they turn their heart in the land to which they have been carried captive, and repent and plead with you in the land of their captivity, saying, ‘We have sinned and have acted perversely and wickedly,’
  7. if they repent with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their captivity to which they were carried captive, and pray toward their land, which you gave to their fathers, the city that you have chosen and the house that I have built for your name,
  8. On the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people away to their homes, joyful and glad of heart for the prosperity that the Lord had granted to David and to Solomon and to Israel his people.
  9. For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that my name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will be there for all time.
  10. And those who had set their hearts to seek the Lord God of Israel came after them from all the tribes of Israel to Jerusalem to sacrifice to the Lord, the God of their fathers.
  11. And he did evil, for he did not set his heart to seek the Lord.
  12. And they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and with all their soul,
  13. And all Judah rejoiced over the oath, for they had sworn with all their heart and had sought him with their whole desire, and he was found by them, and the Lord gave them rest all around.
  14. But the high places were not taken out of Israel. Nevertheless, the heart of Asa was wholly true all his days.
  15. For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars.”
  16. His heart was courageous in the ways of the Lord. And furthermore, he took the high places and the Asherim out of Judah.
  17. Nevertheless, some good is found in you, for you destroyed the Asheroth out of the land, and have set your heart to seek God.”
  18. And he charged them: “Thus you shall do in the fear of the Lord, in faithfulness, and with your whole heart:
  19. The high places, however, were not taken away; the people had not yet set their hearts upon the God of their fathers.
  20. He searched for Ahaziah, and he was captured while hiding in Samaria, and he was brought to Jehu and put to death. They buried him, for they said, “He is the grandson of Jehoshaphat, who sought the Lord with all his heart.” And the house of Ahaziah had no one able to rule the kingdom.
  21. And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, yet not with a whole heart.
  22. You say, ‘See, I have struck down Edom,’ and your heart has lifted you up in boastfulness. But now stay at home. Why should you provoke trouble so that you fall, you and Judah with you?”
  23. Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the Lord, the God of Israel, in order that his fierce anger may turn away from us.
  24. Then Hezekiah said, “You have now consecrated yourselves to the Lord. Come near; bring sacrifices and thank offerings to the house of the Lord.” And the assembly brought sacrifices and thank offerings, and all who were of a willing heart brought burnt offerings.
  25. But the priests were too few and could not flay all the burnt offerings, so until other priests had consecrated themselves, their brothers the Levites helped them, until the work was finished—for the Levites were more upright in heart than the priests in consecrating themselves.
