  1. But in their distress they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and sought him, and he was found by them.
  2. One nation was being crushed by another and one city by another, because God was troubling them with every kind of distress.
  3. Then he assembled all Judah and Benjamin and the people from Ephraim, Manasseh and Simeon who had settled among them, for large numbers had come over to him from Israel when they saw that the Lord his God was with him.
  4. They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and soul.
  5. All who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman.
  6. All Judah rejoiced about the oath because they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They sought God eagerly, and he was found by them. So the Lord gave them rest on every side.
  7. He brought into the temple of God the silver and gold and the articles that he and his father had dedicated.
  8. At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him: “Because you relied on the king of Aram and not on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand.
  9. but sought the God of his father and followed his commands rather than the practices of Israel.
  10. So the king of Israel brought together the prophets—four hundred men—and asked them, “Shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I not?” “Go,” they answered, “for God will give it into the king’s hand.”
  11. But Micaiah said, “As surely as the Lord lives, I can tell him only what my God says.”
  12. When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, “This is the king of Israel.” So they turned to attack him, but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the Lord helped him. God drew them away from him,
  13. There is, however, some good in you, for you have rid the land of the Asherah poles and have set your heart on seeking God.”
  14. Jehoshaphat Appoints Judges

    Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem, and he went out again among the people from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim and turned them back to the Lord, the God of their ancestors.
  15. Now let the fear of the Lord be on you. Judge carefully, for with the Lord our God there is no injustice or partiality or bribery.”
  16. and said: “Lord, the God of our ancestors, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you.
  17. Our God, did you not drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend?
  18. Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”
  19. He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.
  20. Then some Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up and praised the Lord, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice.
  21. Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the Lord your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful.”
  22. The fear of God came on all the surrounding kingdoms when they heard how the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel.
  23. And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was at peace, for his God had given him rest on every side.
  24. The high places, however, were not removed, and the people still had not set their hearts on the God of their ancestors.
  25. To this day Edom has been in rebellion against Judah. Libnah revolted at the same time, because Jehoram had forsaken the Lord, the God of his ancestors.
