  1. Now then, let me advise you how you can save your own life and the life of your son Solomon.

  6. Solomon Builds His Palace

    It took Solomon thirteen years, however, to complete the construction of his palace.
  7. This is how the stands were made: They had side panels attached to uprights.
  8. “But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!
  9. How happy your people must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom!
  10. Solomon’s Wives

    King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites.
  11. Here is the account of how he rebelled against the king: Solomon had built the terraces and had filled in the gap in the wall of the city of David his father.
  12. Now Jeroboam was a man of standing, and when Solomon saw how well the young man did his work, he put him in charge of the whole labor force of the tribes of Joseph.
  13. However, as for you, I will take you, and you will rule over all that your heart desires; you will be king over Israel.
  14. Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked.
  15. He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
  16. King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram, who was in charge of forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem.
  17. The other events of Jeroboam’s reign, his wars and how he ruled, are written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel.
  18. As for all the other events of Asa’s reign, all his achievements, all he did and the cities he built, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? In his old age, however, his feet became diseased.
  19. Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” But the people said nothing.
  20. Elijah Flees to Horeb

    Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.
  21. The king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said to them, “See how this man is looking for trouble! When he sent for my wives and my children, my silver and my gold, I did not refuse him.”
  22. Jezebel his wife said, “Is this how you act as king over Israel? Get up and eat! Cheer up. I’ll get you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.”
  23. “Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself, I will not bring this disaster in his day, but I will bring it on his house in the days of his son.”
  24. The king said to him, “How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the Lord?”
  25. In everything he followed the ways of his father Asa and did not stray from them; he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. The high places, however, were not removed, and the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.
