  1. Then God said, “Let the waters swarm with fish and other life. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind.”

  13. Abram Is Named Abraham

    When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai—‘God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life.

  45. But never consume the blood, for the blood is the life, and you must not consume the lifeblood with the meat.
  46. In that case, take an awl and push it through his earlobe into the door. After that, he will be your servant for life. And do the same for your female servants.
  47. You must show no pity for the guilty! Your rule should be life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

  51. The Choice of Life or Death

    “This command I am giving you today is not too difficult for you, and it is not beyond your reach.
  52. “Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster.
  53. then I warn you now that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live a long, good life in the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy.
  54. “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!
  55. You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the Lord, you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
  56. Look now; I myself am he! There is no other god but me! I am the one who kills and gives life; I am the one who wounds and heals; no one can be rescued from my powerful hand!

  70. Michal Saves David’s Life

    Then Saul sent troops to watch David’s house. They were told to kill David when he came out the next morning. But Michal, David’s wife, warned him, “If you don’t escape tonight, you will be dead by morning.”
  71. Stay here with me, and don’t be afraid. I will protect you with my own life, for the same person wants to kill us both.”
  72. David Spares Saul’s Life

    After Saul returned from fighting the Philistines, he was told that David had gone into the wilderness of En-gedi.
  73. Please forgive me if I have offended you in any way. The Lord will surely reward you with a lasting dynasty, for you are fighting the Lord’s battles. And you have not done wrong throughout your entire life.
  74. “Even when you are chased by those who seek to kill you, your life is safe in the care of the Lord your God, secure in his treasure pouch! But the lives of your enemies will disappear like stones shot from a sling!
  75. Then Saul confessed, “I have sinned. Come back home, my son, and I will no longer try to harm you, for you valued my life today. I have been a fool and very, very wrong.”
  76. Now may the Lord value my life, even as I have valued yours today. May he rescue me from all my troubles.”
  77. “Very well!” David agreed. “Now you will see for yourself what we can do.” Then Achish told David, “I will make you my personal bodyguard for life.”

  91. “‘But I will not take the entire kingdom from Solomon at this time. For the sake of my servant David, the one whom I chose and who obeyed my commands and decrees, I will keep Solomon as leader for the rest of his life.
  92. For David had done what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight and had obeyed the Lord’s commands throughout his life, except in the affair concerning Uriah the Hittite.
  93. Although the pagan shrines were not removed, Asa’s heart remained completely faithful to the Lord throughout his life.
  94. It was during his reign that Hiel, a man from Bethel, rebuilt Jericho. When he laid its foundations, it cost him the life of his oldest son, Abiram. And when he completed it and set up its gates, it cost him the life of his youngest son, Segub. This all happened according to the message from the Lord concerning Jericho spoken by Joshua son of Nun.
  95. And he stretched himself out over the child three times and cried out to the Lord, “O Lord my God, please let this child’s life return to him.”
  96. The Lord heard Elijah’s prayer, and the life of the child returned, and he revived!
  97. But as soon as I leave you, the Spirit of the Lord will carry you away to who knows where. When Ahab comes and cannot find you, he will kill me. Yet I have been a true servant of the Lord all my life.
  98. Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. He went to Beersheba, a town in Judah, and he left his servant there.
  99. Then he went on alone into the wilderness, traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors who have already died.”
  100. Once more the king sent a third captain with fifty men. But this time the captain went up the hill and fell to his knees before Elijah. He pleaded with him, “O man of God, please spare my life and the lives of these, your fifty servants.
