  1. Noah and the Flood

    This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.
  2. The Lord then said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation.
  3. Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
  4. Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?
  5. What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?
  6. Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
  7. The Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
  8. what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?” “If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”
  9. Judah recognized them and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn’t give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not sleep with her again.
  10. Who can count the dust of Jacob or number even a fourth of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and may my final end be like theirs!”
  11. And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today?
  12. And if we are careful to obey all this law before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.”
  13. Not Because of Israel’s Righteousness

    Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky.
  14. After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself, “The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is going to drive them out before you.
  15. It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
  16. Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.
  17. Return their cloak by sunset so that your neighbor may sleep in it. Then they will thank you, and it will be regarded as a righteous act in the sight of the Lord your God.
  18. They will summon peoples to the mountain and there offer the sacrifices of the righteous; they will feast on the abundance of the seas, on the treasures hidden in the sand.”
  19. He chose the best land for himself; the leader’s portion was kept for him. When the heads of the people assembled, he carried out the Lord’s righteous will, and his judgments concerning Israel.”
  20. Now then, stand here, because I am going to confront you with evidence before the Lord as to all the righteous acts performed by the Lord for you and your ancestors.
  21. “You are more righteous than I,” he said. “You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly.
  22. The Lord rewards everyone for their righteousness and faithfulness. The Lord delivered you into my hands today, but I would not lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed.
  23. “The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.
  24. The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight.

  27. Praise be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the Lord’s eternal love for Israel, he has made you king to maintain justice and righteousness.”
  28. Praise be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on his throne as king to rule for the Lord your God. Because of the love of your God for Israel and his desire to uphold them forever, he has made you king over them, to maintain justice and righteousness.”
  29. Lord, the God of Israel, you are righteous! We are left this day as a remnant. Here we are before you in our guilt, though because of it not one of us can stand in your presence.”
  30. You found his heart faithful to you, and you made a covenant with him to give to his descendants the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites and Girgashites. You have kept your promise because you are righteous.
  31. In all that has happened to us, you have remained righteous; you have acted faithfully, while we acted wickedly.
  32. ‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can even a strong man be more pure than his Maker?
  33. “I have become a laughingstock to my friends, though I called on God and he answered— a mere laughingstock, though righteous and blameless!

  38. How then can a mortal be righteous before God? How can one born of woman be pure?
  39. what he lays up the righteous will wear, and the innocent will divide his silver.
  40. I put on righteousness as my clothing; justice was my robe and my turban.
  41. Elihu

    So these three men stopped answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.
  42. If you are righteous, what do you give to him, or what does he receive from your hand?
  43. Your wickedness only affects humans like yourself, and your righteousness only other people.
  44. He does not take his eyes off the righteous; he enthrones them with kings and exalts them forever.
  45. The Almighty is beyond our reach and exalted in power; in his justice and great righteousness, he does not oppress.

    Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

  100. The righteous will rejoice in the Lord and take refuge in him; all the upright in heart will glory in him!
