  1. Then Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the boy along with me and we will go at once, so that we and you and our children may live and not die.
  2. Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your bags and take them down to the man as a gift—a little balm and a little honey, some spices and myrrh, some pistachio nuts and almonds.
  3. He asked them how they were, and then he said, “How is your aged father you told me about? Is he still living?”
  4. They replied, “Your servant our father is still alive and well.” And they bowed down, prostrating themselves before him.
  5. And we answered, ‘We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age. His brother is dead, and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’

  7. “So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life,
  8. “So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt.
  9. Tell my father about all the honor accorded me in Egypt and about everything you have seen. And bring my father down here quickly.”
  10. and bring your father and your families back to me. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt and you can enjoy the fat of the land.’
  11. And this is what he sent to his father: ten donkeys loaded with the best things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and other provisions for his journey.
  12. So they went up out of Egypt and came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan.
  13. Jacob Goes to Egypt

    So Israel set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.
  14. Then Jacob left Beersheba, and Israel’s sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts that Pharaoh had sent to transport him.
  15. Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were living in the land of Canaan, have come to me.
  16. Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan and are now in Goshen.”
  17. and the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability, put them in charge of my own livestock.”
  18. Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed Pharaoh,
  19. So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land, the district of Rameses, as Pharaoh directed.
  20. but when I rest with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.” “I will do as you say,” he said.
  21. Now Israel’s eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see. So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them and embraced them.
  22. Then he blessed Joseph and said, “May the God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,
  23. the Angel who has delivered me from all harm —may he bless these boys. May they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they increase greatly on the earth.”
  24. Then Israel said to Joseph, “I am about to die, but God will be with you and take you back to the land of your fathers.
  25. Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel, for you went up onto your father’s bed, onto my couch and defiled it.
