16 And when she came to her mother-in-law, she said, “How did you fare, my daughter?” Then she told her all that the man had done for her, 17 saying, “These six measures of barley he gave to me, for he said to me, ‘You must not go back empty-handed to your mother-in-law.’” 18 She replied, “Wait, my daughter, until you learn how the matter turns out, for the man will not rest but will settle the matter today.”

Naomi’s Response to Ruth

16 When Ruth[a] returned to her mother-in-law, Naomi[b] asked her, “How did it go, my daughter?”

Then she related everything that the man had done for her. 17 Ruth[c] also said, “He gave me these six units[d] of barley and told me, ‘Don’t go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’”[e]

18 Naomi[f] replied, “Be patient, my daughter, until you learn how this works out, because the man won’t rest until he finishes everything today.”
