Psalm 36

Human Wickedness and God’s Love

For the choir director. A psalm of David, the Lord’s servant.

¹An oracle within my heart
concerning the transgression of the wicked person:
There is no dread of God before his eyes,^(A)
²for in his own eyes he flatters himself too much
to discover and hate his sin.^(B)
³The words of his mouth are malicious and deceptive;^(C)
he has stopped acting wisely and doing good.^(D)
⁴Even on his bed he makes malicious plans.^(E)
He sets himself on a path that is not good
and does not reject evil.^(F)

⁵Lord, Your faithful love reaches to heaven,
Your faithfulness to the clouds.^(G)
⁶Your righteousness is like the highest mountains;
Your judgments, like the deepest sea.^(H)
Lord, You preserve man and beast.^(I)
⁷God, Your faithful love is so valuable
that people take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.^(J)
⁸They are filled from the abundance of Your house;
You let them drink from Your refreshing stream,^(K)
⁹for with You is life’s fountain.^(L)
In Your light we will see light.^(M)

¹⁰Spread Your faithful love over those who know You,
and Your righteousness over the upright in heart.^(N)
¹¹Do not let the foot of the arrogant man come near me
or the hand of the wicked one drive me away.^(O)
¹²There the evildoers fall;
they have been thrown down and cannot rise.^(P)

To the Director: By the servant of the Lord, David.

An Oracle from the Lord

36 An oracle that came to me^[a] about the transgressions of the wicked:

There is no fear of God before his eyes.
²He flatters himself^[b] too much^[c] to discover his transgression and hate it.
³The words from his mouth are vain and deceptive.
    He has abandoned behaving wisely and doing good.
⁴He devises iniquity on his bed
    and is determined to follow a path that is not good.
        He does not resist evil.

Praise to the Lord

⁵Your gracious love, Lord, reaches to the heavens;
    your truth^[d] extends to the skies.^[e]
⁶Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
    your justice is like the great depths of the sea.^[f]
        You deliver both^[g] people and animals, Lord.
⁷How precious is your gracious love, God!
    The children of men take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
⁸They are refreshed from the abundance of your house;
    You cause them to drink from the river of your pleasures.
⁹For with you is a fountain of life,
    and in your light we will see light.

¹⁰Send forth your gracious love to those who know you,
    and your righteousness to those who are upright in heart.
¹¹Do not let the foot of the proud crush me;
    and do not let the hand of the wicked dissuade me.
¹²There, those who do evil have fallen;
    They have been thrown down,
        and they cannot get up.
