⁵Though good advice lies deep within the heart,
a person with understanding will draw it out.

⁵Advice comes from the deep waters of the heart;
those with understanding can draw it out.

¹⁸Plans succeed through good counsel;
don’t go to war without wise advice.

¹⁸Plans are firmed up by advice;
wage wars with good guidance.

⁹Don’t waste your breath on fools,
for they will despise the wisest advice.

⁹Don’t speak in the ears of fools,
for they will scorn your insightful words.

⁹The heartfelt counsel of a friend
is as sweet as perfume and incense.

⁹Oil and incense make the heart glad,
and the sweetness of friends comes from their advice.^[a]
