“If thieves came to you, if plunderers of the night—How you have been destroyed!—would they not steal what they wanted?[a] If grape gatherers came, would they not leave gleanings? How Esau has been pillaged; his treasures have been ransacked! All of your allies[b] have driven you up to the boundary; your confederates[c] have deceived you and have prevailed against you. Those who eat your bread have set an ambush for you, there is no[d] understanding of it.[e] On that day,” declares[f] Yahweh, “will I not destroy the wise men from Edom, and understanding from the mountain of Esau? And your warriors will be shattered, O Teman, so that everyone[g] from the mountain of Esau will be cut off because of the slaughter!

All the men in your confederacy
Shall force you to the border;
(C)The men at peace with you
Shall deceive you and prevail against you.
Those who eat your bread shall lay a [a]trap for you.
(D)No[b] one is aware of it.

“Will(E) I not in that day,” says the Lord,
“Even destroy the wise men from Edom,
And understanding from the mountains of Esau?
Then your (F)mighty men, O (G)Teman, shall be dismayed,
To the end that everyone from the mountains of Esau
May be cut off by slaughter.
